Tourists are amused by the cute creatures that are sociable, live in clans and are fond of a variety of plants. The photogenic features of the Quokkas helped in their immense popularity. "Quokka selfies" have kept popping up in popular social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter and are getting a lot of attention.

The cute creature can also be found on the mainland, but are commonly seen on some smaller islands like Rottnest Island off Perth, Bald Island and off Albany.

Along with the popularity of the cute marsupials is the truth they're on the path to extinction. Tourists aren't allowed to touch the animals, but there are some that still give them food not safe for them to eat.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature put the Quokkas under its red list, which means it's illegal to handle the animals. There's also a fine of AU$300 for anyone caught in the act of touching the endangered creatures.

Quokkas are wild animal that bite when provoked. Behind those smiles, they also have sharp teeth and claws.
