13-Year-Old Cayman Naib Committed Suicide After Receiving Negative School Progress Report

Cayman Naib, the 13-year-old dimpled boy whose body was found in a shallow creek days after he was reported missing, committed suicide, his family said Monday.

An autopsy confirmed the family's claim that Naib shoot himself in the head with a gun taken from his home.

According to the Delaware County medical examiner's office, the autopsy result showed that Cayman Naib committed suicide after he left his Newtown Square home.

The family said the gun was fitted for a trigger lock but was still able to fire.

The gun was found near where Cayman Naib's body was found by search-and-rescue personnel and over a hundred volunteers.

Authorities did not immediately comment about the discovery of the gun near the body of Naib when he was found. The police even theorized that the teen accidentally fell into the creek.

"No words can adequately express the Naib family's pain and sadness at this news," the family said in a statement on Facebook.

The family believed Cayman Naib was devastated after receiving a negative school progress report.

He left his home Wednesday, just a few minutes before a snowstorm and frigid temperatures descended on the Philadelphia area.

The search for Naib, who was described as thoughtful, bright and fun-loving teen, involved almost the entire community and hundreds joined authorities in braving bitter cold just to find him alive.

Thousands more followed days of search in news reports and on social media, expressing hopes and optimism that the missing Delco teen be found alive.

"We all wanted a different outcome," said Mark G. Hopkins, chief of Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue, which Newtown Square Township police had brought in.

Hopes and optimism turned into sadness and tears, as tearful parents and classmates from the Shiply School in Bryn Mawr, which Naib attended, gathered at a candlelight vigil after hearing the news about the boy's death.
