Apple Lost $25 Million in Sales From 11 Hour Outage

Apple lost $25 million in lost sales with its 11 hour store outage.

Apple suffered an 11 hour outage on iTunes, iBooks, iCloud, and iOS and Mac App Store earlier today, the largest service outage in the company's history.

It was caused by a DNS failure, probably due to Apple moving the IP address for some servers. A DNS (domain name system) turns the IP address into a domain name, a critical foundation on the worldwide web.

In the 11 hours offline, Apple lost a reported $25 million in sales, mostly from its App Store. This is a mere drop in Apple's $180 billion pool of cash but for small development studios, it might mean an awful lot.

Apple hasn't talked about any reparations for the time offline and we don't expect the company will reimburse developers for any lost revenue since it's impossible to calculate how many raw sales an app would have made in 11 hours.

It's one of the first times in eight years iTunes and the App Store has been offline for more than a few hours. It shows Apple is at least consistent in keeping its stores online, something that can't be said for Sony with PlayStation Now.

Apple brought in over $10 billion in 2014 for developers, adding to the total of $15 billion. In the past two years, Apple has brought in 85 percent of the total mobile revenue since 2008, showing the huge growth of iOS in 2013 and 2014.

The company is hoping that with the launch of Beats Music and an internet TV service it will be able to make even more revenue from subscription services.
