FBI Says Driverless Cars Make Deadlier IEDs

FBI Fears Driverless Cars Could Become Lethal Weapons

Driverless cars could reduce the number of car accidents considerably but also have the potential to be used as deadly weapons.

This is one of the future fates faced by driverless or self-driving cars. According to a recent FBI report, the technology used in driverless cars can also be used in lethal applications and pose a threat to society and national security.

The report made by the FBI's Strategic Issues Group also believes the driverless car is a "game changing" development that could lead to the vehicles being used as "lethal weapons" such as the VBIEDs or vehicle borne improvised explosive devices favored by terrorists.

The report said unrelenting terrorist threats and technology advancements means we'll be exposed to more risks such as explosive laden driverless vehicles or "driverless VBIEDs."

The driverless car will serve to embolden terrorists who no longer have to cajole a comrade to commit suicide by driving a car and detonating the explosives.

The FBI's obsession with driverless VBIEDs appears throughout the report, which also examines how driverless cars could be to facilitate crimes such as bank robberies and getaways.

The FBI report obtained by the newspaper The Guardian said "Autonomy ... will make mobility more efficient, but will also open up greater possibilities for dual-use applications and ways for a car to be more of a potential lethal weapon that it is today."

Google is one of the leaders in self-driving technologies. It has built actual prototypes that it is testing.
