Tunisian authorities are now hunting the third gunman who was involved in Wednesday's national museum massacre in Tunisia that killed mostly foreign tourists.

This was the first time that the Tunisian authorities revealed that there were three gunmen who indiscriminately killed tourists at one of North Africa's most valued historical institutions.

"Two were executed but one is on the run still. But he won't go very far," said Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi.

The Tunisia's Interior Ministry released the recorded footages from the museum's CCTV which showed two men with armed rifles walked through the museum. Along the way, the two men stopped and talked with a third man who had a backpack.

They acknowledged each other and proceeded to go in opposite directions.

President Essebsi said that there were security failures at the museum.

"The police and intelligence were not systematic enough to ensure the safety of the museum," President Essebsi said.

Initial investigation cited that the guards, who were on duty at that time, had their coffee break when the attack occurred. Allegedly, the duty guards should have been on their posts, protecting the museum and the nearby parliament.

The policemen, who responded to the attack, were the ones who were able to kill two of the gunmen.

This alleged lapse in security will be taken into consideration during the full investigation.

The two gunmen, who were killed by the responding police, were later identified as Tunisians who were in their 20s and had trainings in Libya.

The Islamic State (IS) militants took responsibility in the terror attack at the museum. There were other reports in some online social media sites, however, that the attack was staged by an al-Qaeda allied group that is based in Tunisia.

The IS militants have been seeking for the establishment of a caliphate in Syria, Iraq and other Muslim countries.
