If Facebook was made the basis for a worldwide popularity contest, Shakira is now the most popular girl on the planet.

On Friday, Colombian singer Shakira garnered 100 million likes on her official Facebook fan page.  The only other two with more likes are Facebook's own fan page and the fan page of the site's mobile app.

Shakira stated, "I am honored and humbled about reaching this milestone. Social media and specifically Facebook has helped myself and other artists bridge the gap between the stage and the audience."

Before reaching the 100-million milestone, her page had previously reached 50 million likes, becoming the most popular celebrity fan page on Facebook.

The top three international cities her Facebook fans come from are Mexico City, Cairo and Istanbul.

Justin Osofsky, Facebook vice president of Global Operations and Media Partnerships stated, "The combination of Shakira's global appeal, her authentic engagement with fans and her use of Facebook as a multi-media platform has positioned her to achieve the incredible milestone of 100 million fans."

Aside from Shakira's global appeal and mainstream likeability, her performance in this year's FIFA World Cup is believed to have pushed her popularity to even greater heights, helping her garner a larger number of followers.

She had recently posted a photo of her visit to Brazil for the World Cup. The said photo, which received 3.5 million likes in 4 days, has acquired the most number of likes amongst all her Facebook photos.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg dropped the singer a congratulatory post on her fan page. He wrote, "Congrats! What an amazing milestone for an amazing person."

Shakira also posted a video on Facebook to thank her followers.

Apart from her unique vocal style, the Grammy winner is famous for her Latin-infused belly dancing.

Shakira's top hits include "Hips Don't Lie", "Whenever, Wherever" and "Beautiful Liar," a collaboration with singer Beyoncé.
