One of America's "Top Cops" is in coma after being shot in the face at point-blank range on Friday night in Roxbury, Boston City.

John Moynihan, 34, was honored last year by White House as one of the country's "Top Cops" after saving the life of a police officer who was shot Boston Marathon bombers. He is now critical condition at Boston Medical Center.

His family members, relatives, friends and co-workers are hoping and praying for his fast recovery. Police Commissioner William Evans positively said Moynihan would be able to pull through this because he is a "fighter."

Evans said that Moynihan was shot below the right eye and the bullet lodged at the back of his right ear.

The suspect, who was identified as 41-year old Angelo West, is said to have been imprisoned many times before for gun-related crimes.

"Without provocation, as the driver is getting out, you can see his right arm come-up point-blank and shot officer Moynihan right below the eye," said Evans.

West ran after shooting Moynihan and fired at other responding police officers. West was killed during the gun battle.

Evans added that "none of our officers like to use their firearms." He said that the police officers were provoked by what West did to Moynihan.

Moynihan is one of the 53 police officers honored by White House as "America's Top Cops." He saved the life of police officer Richard Donohue in April 2013 wherein a gunfight occurred between police forces and the perpetrators involved in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Donohue was almost out of blood when he obtained several wounds from the gunfight but Moynihan, together with other Massachusetts police officers, saved his life.
