McDonald's To Serve Bigger, Better $5 Burger To Ramp Up Sales

A bigger, one-third pound burger is about to join McDonald's menu, in the company's non-stop bid to attract more customers amid sagging sales.

McDonald's will be serving its new premium sirloin burger in U.S. branches beginning May 12th until the end of June for the price of USD$5.

However, a super sized burger isn't new at McDonald's as the fast food chain had previously sold the Angus Third Pound burgers.  But it was taken off the menu for being too pricey.

The new giant burger will be thick and juicy, topped with real and fresh ingredients, including bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, or Steakhouse style with grilled mushrooms, white cheese and peppercorn sauce.  The sandwich is believed to be served on a wooden paddle.

"We know that consumers care about their food. They want it to be real, fresh and authentic," McDonald's spokesperson Lisa McComb said. "These new burgers are thick, freshly prepared Sirloin Third Pound Burgers with real and fresh toppings."

Experts said while pricey burgers may be a tough sell at McDonald's, the new sirloin burgers is still considered a good move amid tough competition against fast-casual chains like Five Guys and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Aside from offering the third pound burger, McDonald's is also experimenting with new options like "Create Your Taste" menu, where customers can create their own gourmet burger from a selection of toppings.

The company is also experimenting with pastries to compete with coffee shops.

Recently, McDonald's announced it's shifting to chickens raised without antibiotics, followed by a launch of its all-day breakfast.

McDonald's new Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook had been resorting to much more aggressive steps improve the company's image and two years of declining sales.
