American writer Stephen King, known for his supernatural horror and thriller novels, will be set for another movie and TV series based on his book, 'The Dark Tower', according to Hollywood Reporter.

After numerous attempts by Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins to make the novel a real movie for more than a decade, they are now given the 'go signal' for production by Sony and MRC.

The two companies will work hand in hand to produce and co-finance. Sony's goal is to create the novel into a combination of a movie series and a complimentary TV series.

The project was already in development for the past decade at Universal, with a promising format of three movies and a TV series. However, the high expense was the main cause why the project didn't successfully push through the past years.

Actor Javier Bardem was once enticed to be involved in the series while it was still in negotiation. Ron Howard was slated to direct the first installment .

The upcoming project will also have an overall makeover of the script by having it rewritten by Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner.  The new script will showcase the first book of the series, Gunslinger. The production team of Dark Tower's director chair is still vacant as they are still searching for the one fit for the job.

"There are a few projects out there that compare with scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with Dark Tower. I am a giant fan," said Tom Rothman, the new chairman for Sony Entertainment Pictures Group.

Rothman also emphasized that it would a great opportunity for the director to put his/her stamp on a 'global franchise'.

For the Stephen King, the writer of the Dark Tower series, he expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming project.

"I'm excited that the Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen. This is a brilliant and creative approach to books," said King.
