Axiom Verge --One Man's Tribute to the Side Scroll Game of the 80s

Side scroll games were all the rage in 1980s. Those old enough will remember games like Metroid, Castlevania or Contra.

In 2002, the latest in the Metroid series, Metroid Fusion, was released. Its 3D counterpart, Metroid Prime, was also released the same year.

There are a lot of side scroll games currently being released.  None seem to capture the essence of those 80s games, however.  Fortunately, a recently released PS4 side scroll game called Axiom Verge will try to bring the nostalgia back.

Thomas Happ is the lone developer of this side scroll game. He did the programming, including the game art, sounds and music. It took him five years to finish Axiom Verge.

The game starts when your character, dies. When you wake up, you find yourself in an alien world.

Every being in this alien world is bent on killing you and the only way to for you to live is to kill them first. You'll have to explore and search for weapons to use.

You will encounter a lot of dead ends but later on, the weapons and items you find will unlock these once blocked areas and allow you to explore other areas of this immense game environment.

Some of the weapons you find can be quite strange but very useful. One of the weapons you'll get is the glitch gun. It can transform bubbles into solid matter that you can step on to reach the higher levels.

The glitch gun is the developer's tribute to the hidden glitches in some of the old games of the 80s such as the ones in the NES systems.

In addition to the PS 4 launch, Axiom Verge is expected to be released for the PS Vita and Windows PC sometime this year.
