A "Fast and Furious" style drag race in the heart of China's capital ended in a collision involving a sludge green Lamborghini and a red Ferrari.

Pensioners now feel unsafe as the streets around their houses have been transformed into an illegal racing circuit for drag racing. Because of this, the elderly living in northern Beijing have pleaded with authorities to close down the drag races in the capital.

While the collision last weekend has brought the races reminiscent of the Fast and Furious franchise to light recently, residents of the nearby Fenglin Luzhou neighbourhood say that these races have been taking place for years.

Zhao Lihua, a 64-year old woman whose 11th floor flat serves as a front row seat to the nightly contests, says that she feels angry and helpless. She pleads for someone to do something about the elite Chinese boys who take part in the races.

"These racers have no character at all," Zhao shouted. "They are abominable. They cannot be the children of ordinary people."

Already complaining about the races to a newspaper, Zhao and her community's pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

The sea of high-end sport cars now flooding Beijing is a stark contrast to the Beijing of just a few years ago. Then, the streets were filled with bicycles instead of cars.

However, the recent economic boom of the country has created new status symbols for the upcoming Chinese capitalist elites.

In 2012, 7,318 Ferraris were created with 10 percent of those (784) going to China.

Apart from the influx of high-speed cars on the streets, a number of them also find their way into a scrapyard with drivers finding their ways to hospitals or worse, graveyards.

Last February saw one fatality take place due to the illegal races which saw a red Ferrari crash and burst into flames on a motorway near Beijing's international airport.

Two years earlier the 23-year old son of Ling Jihua, a former aide to President Hu Jintao, died after crashing his black Ferrari 458 Spider. Two female passengers were left injured.

Residents along the afflicted area hope that authorities can help clampdown on the drag races, lessening the noise and the number of accidents.
