North Carolina Campus Shooting Kills One; Suspect At Large

A gunman stormed into a building of a North Carolina campus, shooting and killing a school employee.  A manhunt is underway to arrest the suspect.

The victim, Ron Lane, was the school's long-time print shop operator.  The suspected gunman identified as 20-year-old Kenneth Morgan Stancil III, was a former student and had worked for the victim in the past in a work-study program. Stancil remains at large.

The entire school was placed under lockdown following the shooting.

Wayne County Sheriff's Office's Maj. Tom Effler said the shooting at the Wayne Community College in Goldsboro is an isolated incident.  But he nevertheless warned the public to remain vigilant, as he called Stancil "armed and dangerous."

Police described the suspect as a white man, 5-foot-11 inches tall, has a goatee and a tattoo over his left eye.

Authorities said the victim and the suspect knew each other, but the motive of the killing remains unknown.

School officials expressed deep regrets and sadness over the loss of a valued employee.

"This is indeed a sad day for Wayne Community College and this close family and community," Wayne Community College President Kay Albertson said.

"Our hearts are heavy at the loss of an employee -- a valued employee -- and we will soon be reaching out to the family," she added.

Albertson said the shooting happened on the third floor of a campus building.

School officials commended the quick response of authorities who are doing everything they can to arrest the suspect.

Police threw tear gas into a restroom but there were no signs of Stancil.

The Wayne campus had 3,800 students.  There have been no reported killings, assaults or robberies inside the campus between 2011 ad 2013.  However, three had been arrested for illegal possession of weapons in 2012 and 2013.

In a statement, school officials suspended classes on Monday, but will resume on Tuesday.
