Ricky Wong Offered to Air HKTV Shows on ATV for $5 Million HKD a Month

HKTV Chairman Ricky Wong expressed his plan to air dramas and other programs through ATV channels for $5 million HKD per month, stating that it will be a win-win situation for both networks.

After being denied to file for licensing by the government, HKTV relied on online streaming in order to air its programs, but Wong recently announced that he is currently in talks with ATV about his plan to air HKTV dramas and variety programs through the network.

ATV has been struggling to stay afloat due to financial difficulties and began selling copyrights to their classic shows in order to gain revenue. Furthermore, the network was not granted permission to renew its license which is said to expire in 2016.

However, since HKTV showed interest in renting the network's channels, 11 in total, it is speculated that ATV's financial struggles may be solved by Wong's offer.

According to media outlets, HKTV is planning to supply more than 1,000 hours of shows to the public through ATV. The plan also includes four hours of programming daily until the end of December. In return, Wong is said to be planning to offer ATV $5 million HKD worth of compensation every month for its digital space.

HKTV offer comes with the condition that the ad revenues will be split in half between the two companies. Additionally, in the event that the advertising revenue under ATV will decrease in certain months, HKTV will still compensate the company with its initial offer.

Wong said, "It's a good thing ...definitely worth thinking about. It will also allow us to compete with TVB up front. You can't compare online viewership ratings with actual TV ratings."

However, the head of HKTV also stated that if the company is not able to reach an agreement with ATV by April 20, he would withdraw his offer.
