Gyrocopter Landing On U.S. Capitol Lawn Shows Flaw In Protected Airspace

Although 61-year-old mailman Doug Hughes from Ruskin landed in jail for his stunt, he successfully showed on Wednesday that the U.S. protected airspace could be breached so easily.

Hughes also got the media attention that he sought. However, the real message that he wanted to deliver --- besides the 535 letters of protests to all members of Congress --- to reform campaign finance apparently did not get through.

What the public noticed was his stunt to land on the U.S. capitol using a gyrocopter, which is a flying bicycle. It took Hughes two and a half years to plan the stunt which involved taking off from a secret gateway believed to be Gettysburg Airport, hovering over low building, passing over the Washington Monument and the National Mall and finally landing in front of the capitol where he was surrounded by cops, reports Tampabay.com.

Unfortunately, he is now paying the price for his actions and is facing charge of breaching Title 49 of the US. Code. After he was processed the same day of his arrest at the U.S. Capitol Police, the mailman was moved to the central cellblock in Washington.

When he was planning his gyrocopter caper, many of his friends though Hughes was crazy for trying for thinking of such a plan. They also believed he would not succeed. Mike Shanahan of Apollo Beach, a fellow mailman, feared that his postman-friend would be killed because of his stunt.

To avert being shot down, he gave Washington advance warning by sending an email to U.S. President Barack Obama before takeoff to convince authorities that he was not a threat and that shooting him down would turn out to be "a bigger headache than letting me deliver these letters."

Obama was in Charlotte, North Carolina, attending a town hall event when Hughes landed, but White House spokesman said he was briefed of the incident.

True to his anticipated outcome, Hughes was arrested and jailed.

Hughes admits, "No sane person would do what I'm doing."

He said the stunt aims to arrest the breakdown of government. He did not want to regret when he turns 75 and witness the fall of the government because he had an idea and did not execute it, he added.

"The unending chase for money I believe threatens to steal our democracy ... I'm demanding reform and declaring a voter's rebellion," the LA Times quotes Hughes.
