U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, went to Cairo, Egypt on Monday, to promote a plan for a truce, saying that Hamas had a choice to make whether to accept Egypt's proposed plan for a ceasefire.

Israel accepted the ceasefire proposal last week, but Hamas rejected it.

The Palestinian group said it would only accept the ceasefire proposal if Egypt and Israel will remove the blockade in Gaza. The group also wanted the dozens of captured Palestinian soldiers in the West Bank be freed.

Hamas and Israel's military forces have been fighting for more than five years already. Kerry and other diplomats have been trying to put a stop to it, but their efforts prove to be futile.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon went to Tel Aviv on Tuesday to speak with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to discuss plans on how the fighting will stop.

Ban Ki-moon said he wanted the Palestinians and Israelis to cease fire and start talking about what could be done to stop the conflict.

Netanyahu responded that Israel will have to do whatever has to be done to defend itself.

The conflict started because of Israel's and Egypt's blockade on Gaza, which trapped 1.8 million Palestinians.

Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh said the world must understand that they have decided to use blood and heroism to end the siege on Gaza and to free the trapped Palestinians, saying that the blockade is a form of "slow death."

Gaza conflict has already killed more than 600 Palestinians and 30 Israelis.
