Catholic School Does About Face On Young Cancer Patient

The St. Joseph Middle School in Michigan just made a U-turn in the case of a student from Battle Creek who have too many absences because of her leukemia.

The parents of Rose McGrath were told over the weekend by school authorities that the young girl could return to school despite her attending on 32 full days out of 134 days.

However, Barbara McGrath, the mother is not taking any chances and is not sending back Rose to the Catholic school. Instead, her 7th grade daughter, who is now in remission, has transferred to the Lakeview Middle School.

Barbara wants the issues resolved first before she makes a decision if her daughter would go back to private school or continue her education in a public school.

Rose was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2012. Treatments and sick days forced the young girl, now 12, to miss so many days in school. Initially, St. Joseph told the McGraths that Rose could no longer go back, reports the New York Daily News.

However, Barbara told the story to Associated Press, gaining sympathy for her daughter and making St. Joseph change its policy.

The mother disputes the school's computation that Rose only attended 32 days since there were several days when her daughter went to school but had to leave. Barbara said those partial days were excluded from the count.

To help Rose and in consideration of her ailment, St. Joseph said it had reduced her load, including lesser homework and tests. But Barbara insisted that Rose did all her school work.

Citing the girl's attendance and her affected school performance, St. Joseph wrote that Rose would not qualify to continue attending her classes in the school. It pointed out that Rose is an intelligent and thoughtful child and given her circumstances, the school suggested she instead be enrolled in an online program which it had suggested in the past.

"It's not like she's out at the mall having fun, she's in her bed, sick with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. She's not having fun, she's sick," Inquisitr quotes Barbara. "She'd be at school if she could."
