Spear became Miss Venezuela in 2004 and came in fourth at the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand the following year. She also had a few acting stints in numerous soap operas for Telemundo, a U.S.-based network, such as "Pasión Prohibida."

She spent time traveling between Venezuela and the United States and was on vacation when she was slain.

The two teens were among ten people who allegedly participated in the robbery and murder. All were caught --- the first three pleaded guilty and sentenced to 24 to 26 years in prison, while the other five suspects are on trial.

According to the prosecutors, the 17-year old participated in the murders and aggravated robbery while the 15-year-old was charged with theft and conspiracy and resisting arrest.   They were sentenced to six months' probation and four years in prison.

The death of Miss Valenzuela triggered a wave of online anti-government sentiments for its poor peace and order handling.   Hundreds of actors and writers along with numerous civilians took to the streets of Caracas to demand reforms due to Venezuela's reputation as having one of the world's highest murder rates.

Roberto Briceño, Director of the Violence Observatory, said that his non-profit group counted nearly 45,000 people killed last year or there are 79 for every 100,000 Venezuelans being slain in the country.
