Spiders Sprayed with Graphene Create 'Superstrong Silk'

Experts believe that spider’s silk is considered as one of the strongest materials that exist in the world.

The graphene or carbon nanotubes make the material tougher and turn the silk into a superior one with remarkable uses. Researchers said that graphene is known as a super material.

In an experiment done by Professor Pugno of University of Trento, Italy and his team, they have examined eight-legged participants for the study. The researchers were able to capture five spiders that belong to Pholcidae family and they sprayed them with a mixture of water along with graphene particles that ranges from 200 to 300 nanometers wide.

"We find that the resulting silk has improved mechanical properties,” Professor Pugno said.

In the said experiment, researcher also sprayed another 10 spiders with carbon nanotubes and water as way for them to compare the effects of the two materials they have used.

The result of the experiment shows that the strength of some silk does decreases and some became stronger. Spiders that were sprayed with carbon nanotubes does proved to produce the toughest silk, it approximately 3.5 time stronger that a normal silk.

Upper-strength capacity of the webs that the spiders have created is considered to be the highest so far compared to a knotted fibers. Prof. Pugno added that there is a possibility that it might be a good strategy in developing materials with good quality and characteristics.

Researchers are optimistic that the method might be done to other animals and plants
