Fox Cancels Shows: 'The Following,' Kevin Bacon’s Serial Thriller Will Not Run The Fourth Season

Fox has cancelled the fourth season of Kevin Bacon's "The Following" after three seasons as it fails to generate viewership, finale to be aired on May 18.

"The Following" was aired on Fox TV in midseason 2013 and its thrilling plot ensured that the show opened to excellent ratings. However, the plot and its twists did not have the potential to sustain the viewership that they garnered at the opening.

According to reports on TVline, the show managed a rating of ten million viewers in its opening week which gradually toned down to an average of eight million at the conclusion of the first season. But, when they returned with the second season, the spark seemed to have diminished. The ratings took a huge dive downwards. This continued in the third season as well, forcing the channel to rethink its decision of airing the next season.

Additionally, Fox has several other shows that are in the pipeline and are soon expected to be on air as well. Of the four shows that are on priority, Fox is confident that at least one will be ready on time and therefore removing "The Following" from its run time will make space to accommodate the new entrant. This was reiterated by a report published on Hollywoodreporter. During its premiere, "The Following" gathered a lot of media attention because it was amongst the few non 20th Century Fox shows to be aired on the channel but the serial failed to hold that interest. "The Following" is Warner Bros product that was being aired on the Fox network.

As "The Following" goes off Fox's schedule, the fans across the region will be affected, though to a small extent. The series finale of the serial killer drama is scheduled to be aired on May 18, later this month.
