Space X's Musk Dragon Could Be Used As A Planetary Science Platform

SpaceX

(Photo : Reuters) The unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with Dragon lifts off from launch pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida April 14.

The Dragon capsules are on the path of progress, to be ready soon, after the Space X's pad aborting test was successful this week. The Dragon capsules are the future of the planetary science platform and will be used to fly to the International Space Station in about 2 years.

Elon Musk, who is heading this operation, said in this latest interview that the test showed that Dragon is showing great potential to deliver the science payloads to the moon. It can also be used to deliver payloads to the Jovian Moon, Europa and almost anywhere in the entire solar system, states Florida Today. He further said that it only takes a Falcon Heavy rocket to boost the Dragon anywhere in the solar system.

Space X is also hoping that they are able to launch the Falcon Heavy rocket within this year only; it will be rocket's first flight ever, states News Informer.

They are planning to launch the rocket from Kennedy Space Center's 39 A pad and 3 Flacon 9 boosters are already strapped together for the flight. If successful, this will become the world's most powerful rocket launch vehicle, with about 4.5 million pounds on thrust energy at the time of lift off. SpaceX is planning to create history by launching the rocket in such a manner.

During the recent pad aborting test, Dragon was able to fire eight Super Draco engines, to make the scientists familiar about its escape velocity and launch pad emergency. This exercise helped the scientists to familarise themselves with the whole operation and also made them prepared for any eventualities.

These engines are designed to allow the rocket to perform powered launches and landings. It is also equipped with a killer combination of parachutes, heat shield and landing engines, to boost up its performance and serve as a superb science delivery platform. This is the first time that such a combination of science and technology is been used.

SpaceX is planning to make an innovation in the domain of space travel and with it's recent spate of successes in this area, it is well poised to do so.
