Pregnant 10-year-old Case Divides Paraguay On Abortion Issue

According to one of Paraguay's leading churchmen on Sunday, they admitted that the nation has been divided over the case of a 10-year-old pregnant who denied an abortion.

Msgr. Claudio Gimenez, the president of Paraguay's Episcopal Conference, said that the country was divided in two, according to a report by AP. "Some want to legalize abortion, the killing of an innocent who still is in a period of gestation. And for the other side, those who oppose that idea," Gimenez said.

Child abuse and abortion are legally prohibited in the country. Moreover, abortion is banned in all cases except when the mother's life is in danger.

On Sunday, Paraguay has been split in two where the center of argument over the case of the pregnant 10-year-old has drawn attention to the issues of child abuse and abortion.

The former health minister Sen. Esperanza Martinez protested on the issue that the debate about whether the 10-year-old girl is physically capable of carrying a child. The debate centered on whether the pregnancy overlooks the girl's mental and physical well-being, according to The Washington Post.

Martinez also said in a Senate session that the girl became a uterus and a birth canal, AP reported.

It is said that the Police said on Saturday that they had arrested the fugitive stepfather of the 10-year-old girl. The stepfather was accused of raping the child. Luis Rojar, the Police Commissioner, said that the 42-year-old stepfather had been placed in isolation to keep other inmates from attacking him. Furthermore, the mother of the child had been detained for allegedly failing to protect the girl.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International UK released a statement regarding the case of 10-year-old girl in Paraguay. They called for saving the life of the child and that the child was denied abortion after rape.

"[The stepfather's] disgusting act has left her young body in grave danger. The authorities are denying her access to a safe abortion," Amnesty International UK said in a press release.

Amnesty International UK also released a data regarding maternal deaths in Paraguay. According to recent data from the United Nations, girls aged 10 to 14 made up 2.13 percent of Paraguay's maternal deaths. Also, two births a day are from girls under the age of 14.
