The Cleveland Cavaliers signed 2014 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft No. 1 pick overall Andrew Wiggins into a contract, which they could use as a bargaining chip if they pursue Kevin Love.

Wiggins, a 6-8 forward from the Kansas University Jayhawks, has been eyed by Timberwolves president and coach Flip Saunders in trade talks with the Cavs. Since Wiggins has been signed into a contract, Cavs general manager David Griffin has a month to complete a deal without trading Wiggins or possibly agree in principle to trade Wiggins after 30 days.

Love, an All-Star power forward, is owed US$ 15.7 million next season. Wiggins signed a four-year deal with a starting salary of US$ 5.5 million next season with Cleveland and they would love to keep him in its roster but he could play a big part in the trade.

During the 2014 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Wiggins showed what he can do as he averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in Cleveland's four games. He was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Conference during his only year with the Jayhawks.

LeBron James, who returned to the Cavs, showed interest in playing with Love, his teammate in U.S. national team.

The NBA's leading rebounder in 2011 and three-point shootout champion in 2012, Love could complement James and Kyrie Irving in the perimeter.

The Cavaliers have won the Eastern Conference finals only once in its franchise history and that was when James is in their roster during his first seven-years of professional basketball in 2007. They were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals 4-0.
