Some Well-Known ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ Mods Contain Malwares

Part of the "Grand Theft Auto V" success on the PC platform is its support of user created mods which gives modders complete freedom in adding their own content into the game. However, it was discovered only recently that some of the highly successful "GTA V" mods contain malwares.

One the mods that injects keylogger malware into its users PC is the "Angry Planes" mod. It was first reported by GTA Forums member using the handle "aboutseven." According to PC World, the mod stealthily injects a C# compiler program which automatically sends and receives data across the Internet.

Further investigation revealed that an executable file named "Fade.exe" is injected into the users Temporary Files and records logs of user's activities. What is more alarming is that the program automatically alters the user's Windows registry and sets the computer setting wherein the program will automatically start once the computer boots.

According to Engadget, several websites that hosts the mod has already pulled it down on their servers.

Another mod called "NoClip" was discovered to contain the same malware injected by the "Angry Planes" mod.

Website GTA5-Mods.com which hosted the mods released a statement saying, "The mod did exactly what it advertised, however it also spawned a thread that installed malware on your machine behind the scenes."

The statement added that the creators of the mod ran the .asi file through VirusTotal which in turn made the malware very difficult to detect.

Security experts said that Malwarebytes can detect and remove the malware from infected computers. Additionally, experts encouraged those affected by the malware to change their password since there is a high probability that the keylogger has already picked up their current one.

After the malware was revealed, at least one mod user reported that their Steam account was hacked, according to PC Gamer.
