21st Century Harry Potter: First Look At Syfy's 'The Magicians'

After the Harry Potter franchise ended with the epic two-part movie, here comes "The Magicians," ready to bring the magic back to fantasy TV.

Set to air in 2016, "The Magicians" is an adaptation from the book of the same name, written by Lev Grossman. It tells the story of Quentin Coldwater, played by Jason Ralph, a grad student enrolled in Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret magic school located in upstate New York. Of course, no student of magic would be complete without his trusty group of magic friends, listed by Buzzfeed as Julia played by Stella Maeve, Eliot played by Hale Appleman, and Arjun Gupta as Penny. To the fans of the book, the character Janet has been renamed Margo, who will be played by Summer Bishil. The name change was approved by the author himself, so purists need not worry.

The series will be spearheded by John McNamara and Sera Gamble, both of which are responsible for bringing the show to Syfy. An adaptation has been in the works with FOX since 2011, and after getting declined back in 2012, Polygon reported that Groudswell Productions, who optioned the trilogy, worked with the duo writers, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Sera Gamble, known for being the showrunner of "Supernatural," is a self-confessed fan of the book. And partnered with "Aquariius" creator John McNamara, fans will be glad to know that the New York Times Bestseller is in good hands, though the series feels like a cross between "Harry Potter" and "Gossip Girl" as Slash Film reported. Ironically, the magical series will not hit the small screen until 2016, so fans of the book might have to wait a little longer to fill in the gap in their hearts that Harry Potter filled for the past 10 years.
