Authorities arrested a man from North Texas for sending more than 500 hoax letters laced with white powder to several U.S. government offices, schools and even addresses around the world.

66-year-old Hong Minh Truong, from Rowlett, was charged for false information and hoaxes and has appeared in court in Dallas.

According to reports, Truong had been sending letters by batches of around 10 to 40 letters at a time since 2008. The letters contained threats, and, in most cases, white powder that resembled anthrax.

A federal judge has ordered his detention until the hearing scheduled on August 4.

"While it was determined that the mailings did not contain toxins or poisons, each incident required a field screening of the letter's contents, which cost taxpayer dollars and diverted first responder resources," Special Agent Diego Rodriguez from FBI-Dallas told Fox News.

The letters were sent all over the United States and abroad where U.S. embassies are located. Some letters were delivered more recently to hotels around the area of New Jersey's Super Bowl.

In June 2013, an IP address was identified to be associated with the suspect after 28 schools in Boston reported having received the letters.

Authorities were able to apprehend Truong after tracking him to a post office in Garland where he mailed letters with the same envelop, font, and position stamp he used in the other hoax letters.

Truong faces a maximum of five years in federal jail and a fine of US$250,000 if he is found guilty of eliciting terror through the letters.
