NFL News: Aaron Rodgers Doesn't Want To Call Own Plays Because Peyton Manning Won't Too

Last February, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy gave up the team's play calling duties to his associate head coach and former offensive coordinator Tom Clements. After the move was made public, a lot of people, including fans and the media alike, thought that starting quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers would just do all the play calling by himself.

Well, contrary to popular belief, that was not really the case. And nobody actually does that in the NFL. Including five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning.

"Well, Peyton doesn't do that," Rodgers told ESPN's Rob Demovsky in an interview. "Nobody does that."

With that, the 31-year-old former California Golden Bear not only set the record straight about Green Bay's current offense, but he also discredited one of the most long-standing folklores about the 14-time Pro Bowl player.

However, Rodgers made it clear that he and Manning merely assess the situation at the line of scrimmage and then make the necessary adjustment if any is needed. He then said that there is always someone from the sideline that is providing a starting point for even the best signal callers, as per Yahoo Sports.

"Everybody wants a starting point," Rodgers continued. "It's tough to have to call every single play, so it's always nice when you can have a good starting point and you can make a slight adjustment if you have to."

And it is those big and little adjustments that separate MVP quarterbacks to middling ones.

Clements is a 25-year veteran coach who started as a quarterback coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 1992. He made his NFL debut in 1997 with the New Orleans Saints, again as a quarterback coach. From there he worked for the Kansas City Chiefs (2000), Pittsburg Steelers (2001-2003), and Buffalo Bills (2004-2005).

After McCarthy was signed as the head coach of the Packers in January 2006, he then hired Clements to be his assistant 17 days later. Both had been with Green Bay ever since.

This is the tenth straight year that Rodgers, McCarthy, and Clements are working together so there will be no major changes taking place within the Packers' offense, according to an article on the league's official website.
