Legendary English club Manchester United is determined to get their hands on Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. However, their opening bid of £32 million has been rejected by the Spanish giants. The two football sides are in the middle of a summer transfer battle for both Ramos and Man U goalkeeper David De Gea.

The player swap between the two teams is a hot topic for the summer transfer window. According to the Daily Telegraph, United is determined to sign Ramos but they are also being cautious. They want the defender to prove his desire to move to England instead of just using the team's interest to gain leverage for a fresh Real Madrid contract.

Ramos is now Real Madrid's co-captain and he has enjoyed a decade-long career that has been filled with both ups and downs. One of his biggest contributions was a 93rd minute header that forced extra time on the 2014 Champions League final against bitter rivals Atlético Madrid. Ramos' goal shifted the momentum to Real and they were finally able to secure their elusive 10th Champions League trophy

He has only two years left in his current contract with the club and he is reportedly unhappy that he has not yet been approached for an extension. Despite their reluctance to renew the defender's contract, a recent report by the Daily Mail seems to indicate that Real Madrid is keen on keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to the report, a whopping £65 million price tag has been placed on Ramos' head. Los Blancos are trying to make it clear to the Red Devils that they have no intention of letting Ramos leave. The same report also states that Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has moved to reassure Ramos that his contract will soon be re-negotiated and resolved.

Meanwhile, another report by the Telegraph states that newly-hired Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez has other plans. After reassuring Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo of their place in the team's front row, Benitez is reportedly keen on changing things up at the back. He is reportedly lobbying for a bid to be made on Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.

If the deal to bring in David De Gea pushes through, this dislodges current captain and keeper Iker Casillas. If the team loses Ramos as well, it would mean a new era of leadership at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
