In a press conference held last Saturday in Sao Paolo, Brazil during the Brazil-Japan Economic Forum, Abe said "Japan and China should talk because we have issues to solve."

"My door is always open for dialogue, and I would like China to have the same attitude," Abe added.

Further, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda visited Bejing on July 27 to initiate peace talks and to ease the tensions between the two countries. The trip resulted in Chinese President Xi Jinping expressing his desire to improve ties between his country and Japan, according to the paper.

Since becoming Japan's Prime Minister for the second time in December 2012, he has not been able to hold high level meetings with senior Chinese officials including Xi.

Before the July 27 visit by Fukuda, Xi has previously refused to engage in high level talks with Japanese officials, unless Japan changed its stance over the disputed islands that Japan calls the Senkaku Islands, while the Chinese refer to as its Diaoyu Islands.

President Xi also wanted Japanese prime minister to apologize for his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine that honors the people who died in the war which also include war criminals. Abe's visit to the shrine drew criticisms from China and the United States.
