Looks like purists of the Sherlock Holmes canon are in for a treat with the latest picture of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman released by BBC One. On July 9 via Twitter, the British television channel dropped a "Special image" of the crime-busting duo looking bloody dapper and sleek in Victorian-era suits (and a smooth 'stache for Freeman).

"Shut up everybody, shut up! Don't move, don't speak, don't breathe. A new #Sherlock Special image has landed. . ." BBC One posted.

The picture is a long overdue follow-up to the teaser photo of Holmes and Watson in bowler hats also posted by BBC One in November 2014. But even with the new image, a large number of fans is still left scratching their heads and hungry for a video teaser of the rumored Christmas special.

But one thing is certain, the standalone episode is a departure from the modern reimagining of the detective consultant and his Boswell's adventures. According to series co-creator Steven Moffat, the special is set entirely in the 19th century and independent of the canon.

"The special is its own thing. . . We wanted to do [a Victorian version of "Sherlock"], but it had to be special, it had to be a separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble," Moffat told Entertainment Weekly.

Other than the pictures and occasional interviews, information about the highly anticipated special are yet to be disclosed. Fans are still in the dark about the title, cast, and air date. In an in-depth article, Den of Geek raised the possibility that the episode will not be aired on Christmas day despite being called a "Christmas Special." Following such train of thought, the website might have deducted that "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" as an obvious choice for the basis of a Christmas story.

Despite having high hopes for a Yuletide offering, Den of Geek was quick to refer to a statement by series co-creator Mark Gatiss negating the prospect.

"It's not a Christmas special. It's a special, but we honestly have no idea when it might be on. We're making it in January but we don't know when it's going to be on. Christmas would be nice. The scheduling is not up to us," Gatiss said in an earlier interview with the website.

With tweets from the production team teasing here and there, fans are left with no choice but to wait in despair while deducing the synopsis based on the hashtags #Setlock, #SHSpesh and #221back.
