Thailand Junta Bans Game About Military Rule

Tropico 5

Thailand's military-led junta has banned the distribution and sale of the video game "Tropico 5" in Thailand.

Created by Bulgarian game developer Haemimont, Tropico 5 is a city-building simulation game that lets players create their desired form of government in a distant island.

The game's premise is that a player can establish a place where all workers receive decent wages; citizens never go hungry and the weather is forever sunny and bright as long as the dictator is always "voted" into office, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

"Tropico 5 has been banned but I cannot give the reason unless you ask permission from our Director-General," said an unnamed official at Thailand's Video and Film Office, which is part of the Ministry of Culture.

New Era Interactive Media, the game distributor in Thailand, said it had received a warning from the Ministry of Culture banning the sale of the game.

Nonglak Sahavattanapong, the company's manager for marketing, said the distributor was "disappointed" by the action.

The game was forbidden "because some parts of stories within the game affect Thailand's situation," according to Sahavattanapong.

She did not disclose any more information about the offending plot lines. She noted that "players can play roles as a leader of a country -- they can choose systems of how to run the country."

In the wake of the May 22 army coup d'etat that overthrew the civilian government, the Ministry of Culture is now headed by the Thai navy chief, who is also the deputy leader of the junta.

Prayuth Chan-ocha, the Thai army chief, has suppressed democracy and imposed sweeping curbs on media freedoms since coming to power.
