Aspiring Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, whose infuriating comments on illegal immigration drew several criticisms recently, has been widely picked apart again after questioning Arizona Sen. John McCain's war record.

On Saturday, the 69-year-old real estate mogul made some controversial statements about Sen. McCain, who was held prisoner in Vietnam for five years, LA Times reported.

Trump was answering questions at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa when he remarked that "He's [Sen. McCain] not a war hero." However, Frank Luntz, the host, objected saying "He is a war hero."

"He is a war hero because he was captured," Trump fired back. "I like people that weren't captured OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you have------ I believe perhaps he is a war hero."

These comments have drawn widespread criticisms from the other presidential candidates and the Republican caucus.

According to CNN, the Republican National Committee criticized Trump's comments. The committee has also expressed worries over the outcome of Trump's hardline immigration statements and how it will affect the party's image.

Trump, who was recently threatened on Twitter by Mexican drug lord El Chapo, tried to make amends for his criticism of Sen. McCain later. On Saturday afternoon, he posted on Twitter saying "Captured or not, all our soldiers are heroes!"

McCain was a naval aviator when his plane was shot down in 1967 while flying over the north of Vietnam. His arms and legs were fractured as a result of the fall. While imprisoned in the ill reputed 'Hanoi Hilton,' he was tortured repeatedly. He was later released and returned home in 1973 after his captors discovered his father was a Navy commander.

Now 78-year-old, McCain has been awarded with a Silver Star, a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service.

Sen. McCain's spokesman Brian Rogers has told CNN that there would be no comments regarding Trump's remarks. But McCain's daughter Meghan has expressed shock over Trump's statements on social media.

"I can't believe what I am reading this morning," Meghan tweeted. "There are no words."

Republican candidate Jeb Bush also condemned the comments. "Enough with the slanderous attacks @SenJohnMcCain and all our veterans-particularly POWs have earned our respect and admiration," he tweeted.

Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton has commented on the issue, saying there was nothing funny about Trump's opinions about Mexican immigrants and Sen. McCain.

"There is nothing funny about the hate he is spewing at immigrants and their families and now the insults he has directed at a genuine war hero, Sen. John McCain," Clinton said. "It is shameful and so is the fact that it took so long for most of his fellow Republicans candidates to start standing up to him."

Trump explained his comments further after the event. "If a person is captured, they're a hero as far as I'm concerned," he said. "But you have to do other things also. I don't like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate. He's not taking care of our veterans."
