Texas Shooting Survivor Receives Letter from J.K. Rowling After Quoting Dumbledore in Memorial Service

Just a couple of days after Cassidy Stay survived a shooting in her home in Texas which killed her parents, two brothers, and two sisters last July 9, she publicly quoted a short line from the third Harry Potter book, "The Prisoner of Azkaban".

At the memorial service for her family, the 15-year-old survivor repeated what fictional professor Albus Dumbledore said, "Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

Almost a month after that fatal shooting rampage, the Telegraph reported that the Texas teenager received a handwritten letter from the wise white-haired Hogwarts headmaster, or rather, J.K. Rowling herself, that offered words of encouragement and comfort.

A Facebook page called "We want JK Rowling to meet Cassidy Stay" was created; last August 4, one of the posts confirmed that the "Harry Potter" author did write a personalized handwritten letter using that distinctive purple ink described in the books to the 15-year-old survivor.

Rowling also sent her the third Harry Potter book from where Dumbledore's famous line was quoted along with a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts, and an official list of school supplies.

The bestselling novelist's spokesperson Rebecca Salt confirmed that a letter and package was sent to Cassidy, although no specific information about the letter's contents had been disclosed, being referred to as private.

The Texas teenager survived the shooting with a bullet wounding her in the head but thought of playing dead until the gunman left their house in Spring, Texas. That was when Cassidy called 911 and told authorities about the killer, identifying him as her aunt's former husband, 33-year-old Ronald Lee Haskell and warning police that the suspect was on the way to another location and could kill more people.

Haskell was captured after several hours and was charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

At the public memorial service, the Harry Potter fan shared her sentiments on surviving the tragedy through her quiet strength and bravery. After thanking everyone who had supported her, Cassidy said, "I'm feeling a lot better and I'm on a straightforward path to a full recovery."
