In 2014, Kris was an active member of the Korean boy group, EXO. Along with two other Chinese members, TAO and Luhan. However, both Kris and Luhan had left the group in 2014 whereas TAO left the group in 2015. Fans of EXO immediately questioned their reasons for leaving.

Despite having left EXO, both Kris and Luhan actively sought out activities in the Chinese entertainment industry, to which SM Entertainment had filed a lawsuit against. Their activities in China reportedly were in violation of their contract with SM Entertainment.

Now, Kris has fought back as well and filed his own lawsuit against SM Entertainment. The former EXO member claims in his statement, taken exclusively by Soompi, that his career growth was hindered. In addition, he was treated unfairly and oppressively.

"n January 13, 2008, Kris became an SM trainee in a foreign country to fulfill his dream of becoming a star. During his time as a trainee, his debut plans kept getting pushed by SM Entertainment, on multiple occasions. And after debuting in 2012, in January of 2013 when the group was recording, Kris found out that his part, for which he practiced for about 10 days, had suddenly been cancelled. He asked SM why this was, and they forcefully asked him to leave EXO for a few months, disturbing Kris' career. After multilateral negotiations, Kris returned to the team, but he was continuously treated unfairly and oppressively. SM's discriminatory treatment, unbearable treatment, and lack of vacation resulted in a serious health problem for Kris. From July of 2013 Kris worked while taking medication, and in January of 2014, he was diagnosed with myocarditis in China. Despite these situations, SM did not look after Kris and his health. Furthermore, due to unfair profit allocation and lack of support in Kris' development, he lost all trust in SM's management," reads an excerpt from Kris's' statement. The full statement may be found here.

Following Kris, soon enough TAO and Luhan would also follow suit with their own statements against SM Entertainment.
