According to Daily Mail, a 22-year-old model faces death penalty in China after drugs were found in her belongings. Lopez was supposed to participate in Miss World Medellin pageant but her family lost contact of the young woman while she was in China. Her family contacted the Colombian embassy to know about her whereabouts but Chinese officials have confirmed that Juliana was arrested for drug smuggling.

Shanghaiist website reported that the young model was arrested after she allegedly attempted to bring drugs through the Guangzhou airport back in July 18. Her family members are now trying to raise money to be able to provide a lawyer for her.

In a report by News Australia website, Lopez was described as a good girl, an avid beauty contest contestant, gifted student and an athlete with full of potential. Her football coach has spoken and said that Lopez is the "central part of the group."

"My heart tells me that she is not guilty, she is a fighter. She cannot be sentenced yet, I have hope that she is innocent and that everything can be sorted out," he said.

According to recent updates, the Colombian Foreign Ministry is currently assisting Lopez and her family as the investigation continues. Her case is expected to last up to two years.

"We work to ensure the preservation of the rights of private individuals and the right to a proper defense and the presumption of innocence, as well as respect for due process and the preservation of her personal integrity and her health," according to the ministry.

"Miss Lopez joins 138 prisoners in China's jails. China has the highest execution rate of any country, and carries out more executions than the rest of the world combined, according to Amnesty International," said the report.

Drug smuggling in China can end up in either death penalty or lengthy jail time. Most defendants in this type of cases rarely get freed.
