The 29-year-old was an undrafted player in 2008 who had stints with the Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, and Cleveland Browns during his seven-year career. He was part of the Saints team that won Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 and was also NFC champions in 2009.

Hartley was instrumental for the Saints' winning the NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings in January 2010 after making a 40-yeard field goal in overtime, sending New Orleans to their first ever Super Bowl.

He played two games for the Browns last year where he went 3-for-3 on goal.

The former Oklahoma Sooners standout is set to fill-in for the spot resident Steelers kicker Suisham, who was one of the NFL's most accurate kickers last season at 90.6 percent, vacated after the latter tore his ACL and left knee meniscus in a fluke tackling accident during the team's preseason opening game versus the Vikings last Sunday.

According to 247 Sports, the Steelers had to place rookie backup receiver and quarterback Devin Gardner on the injured list in order to accommodate a spot for Hartley, who had to be in training camp at such a short notice.

The Keller, Texas native is kicking 81.7 percent for his career, which was said to be enough for head coach Mike Tomlin to utilize this coming season.

The NFL's official website noted that Hartley was used to kicking in a dome at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans for most of his career and he might have a tough time adjusting to the windy environment at the Heinz Field.

"It was actually my first time kicking there the other day when we were working out. It was a nice little experience," Hartley said in an interview after the tryouts. "People are always saying that I am a dome kicker but I played college in Oklahoma and the wind blows a little bit there too. I am just excited to have an opportunity to be here."

Hartley won the spot over fellow free agents Alex Henery and Jay Feely, who also participated in the kicker tryouts specifically conducted by Pittsburgh to seek Suisham's replacement.
