NFL News & Rumors: Washington Redskins Will Not Change Name Even For A New Arena

Perhaps no team name is more controversial in American sports than the poorly named team in Washington called the Redskins. A derogatory term that is usually used as a form of ethnic stereotyping against Native Americans, the Redskins name is an unpopular choice for Native Americans and plenty of Native American rights advocacy groups who think the name is in poor taste.

Still, majority owner Daniel Snyder, team president Bruce Allen, and plenty of other people within the Redskins organization refuse to change the name. This has caused political friction between the Redskins and the public, especially since they play their home games near the nation's capital.

This stance on their name makes it difficult for the Redskins to find a new stadium for the team to play in, something that Allen stated is still in a preliminary phase.

They won't have any luck if they want to play back in Washington D.C. however, as there is a lot of political barriers involved. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently told D.C. mayor that National Park Service, who owns the land the Redskins would be interested in playing in, would not grant the Redskins a lease if they were to keep their name.

The Redskins however have no plans on changing the name anytime soon. When Bruce Allen was asked whether or not his stance would change if it meant that the Redskins would get a new stadium, Allen replied with a very direct answer:

"No."

The RFK stadium in D.C. that the National Park Service owns was the former home of the Redskins when they played in Washington. If the Redskins were to move to Washington they would renovate the stadium. They have been in their current home, the FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, since 1997.

Even though the Redskins are currently searching for a new place to call "home" they are not in a rush to move out of Maryland. They are simply getting a jump start on the "15 year process". Their lease in Maryland will run until 2026.

The Washington Redskins had an absymal 4-12 record in the 2014 season.
