Brewers' minor leaguer David Denson became the first active player in affiliated baseball to come out as gay.

Denson, 20, told the Journal Sentinel that he told his family and the Brewers in spring training about his sexuality.

He found it necessary as he was on the verge of a mental breakdown.

Denson, a first baseman/outfielder, had concealed his sexual orientation since being taken by the Brewers in the 15th round of the 2013 draft.

However,  he revealed that keeing it a secret brought him to "a depression level".
Denson felt he was not being himself and it has become evident in his body language.

It even reached a point that he had doubts whether he should remain in the sport.

Denson eventually sought the help of Becky Schnakenberg, a professional counselor contracted to provide mental health assistance to Brewers players.

Consultations with Schnakenberg convinced him he needed to let the team know about his sexuality or risk aggravating his situation.

Denson requested with Brewers minor-league officials to reveal his secret.

Farm director Reid Nichols told Denson upon his revelation that it doesn't matter and he's still a  ballplayer and would continue to help him make it to the MLB.

Nichols said it was a very brave thing for Denson to make such revelation and advised him to just  go out and play.

Denson also admitted his sexuality to teammates about a month ago after one them said a joke that included a derogatory term for gays.

Teammates expressed their support and understanding for Denson during the revelation.

Denson felt relieved that everyone was so accepting, don't treat him differently, wanted the best for him and are looking at him for his ability and not on his sexuality.
