Former F4 heartthrob Jerry Yan revealed on Thursday that he is not quite the best ex-boyfriend. At a promotional interview for his latest series "Best Ex-Boyfriend," the 38-year-old bachelor admitted that his insecurity and lack of self-esteem as a child resulted in the demise of his romantic relationships. Although he made no direct allusion to ex-girlfriend Lin Chi-ling, his statements were easily connected to the 40-year-old model since she was the only woman that Yan openly dated.

Typically private about his affairs, Yan reportedly disclosed quite lengthily about his romances during the press conference, Toggle noted. According to Yan, his inferiority complex that developed as he was growing up in a poor, single-parent family hindered him from fully expressing his emotions even to his loved ones. The need to constantly be strong and prove himself to people supposedly turned him into an abrasive person who constantly flares up when things do not go his way.

Yan's inability to show affection extended to his mother, whom he recalled having scolded when she fell ill. Instead of giving her words of comfort, Yan reportedly reprimanded her for failure to immediately see a doctor.

One particular scene in Best Ex-Boyfriend caused Yan to tearfully recall an incident with a former lover. In the episode, his character's love interest met an accident and he was unable to attend to her. He allegedly sobbed uncontrollably on set and way past the scene's filming. Speculations on the reason for his tears point to an incident wherein Lin fell from a horse in 2005. Rumors claimed that instead of expressing his concern, Yan texted Lin that she was being careless. In interviews following their breakup, Lin stated that she was "deeply hurt" by what happened but did not disclose whether it was Yan.

"I couldn't even say 'I love you' to my girlfriend," Toggle quoted the actor.

Despite his shortcomings, Yan stated that has learned to be more aware and considerate of people's feelings. While he used to prefer expressing his love through "trivial" gestures, he realized the importance of using words to assure a loved one. With friends getting married left and right, Yan also declared that he is eager to tie the knot soon and start his own "happy family" like fellow Taiwanese singer Jay Chou.
