Apple Plans to Launch Siri on MacBook and Macs

Siri, Apple's popular digital voice assistant, could be coming to MacBooks this fall.

The rumor is being fueled by news the United States Patent and Trademark Office has released a patent application for the desktop version of Siri for MacBook.

Siri first appeared and became popular in 2011 on the iPhone 4S, with the "S" standing for "Siri."

Apple is finding ways for Siri to become more a useful digital voice assistant to its wider customer base.

The recent patent called the "Intelligent Digital Assistant" describes how Siri can be useful for Mac users.

The Siri application can dwell in the dock or in the Mac background. It can be activated by either by voice or gesture.

The "Hey, Siri" voice prompt that Apple launched on the iOS 8 will let smartphones running this OS to act on this command.

Siri will be able to file questions and answer to commands, just like on iOS. Since Siri will be lunched in desktop and will have different interactions capabilities, Siri will be able to do a lot of other things, as stated in the patent.

A good example is that Siri could be use as a cursor position to inform how it handles any commands give by the user. Siri can apply a copy command to a photo where the mouse hovers over.

It can also sort and organize files and folders in Finder. Dragging and dropping files from one app to another is also possible.

The patent also states that Siri on Mac can be used as a third input device in addition to the keyboard and mouse. The patent application described Siri as the "third hand."

This capability will let a user interact with background applications while working with various apps in the foreground.

According to Apple, the patent signifies the departure of Siri from mobiles.

The desktop application, however, requires a lot of additional engineering to make it a reality and useful.

Siri won't be available on OS X Yosemite, however.
