Veteran guard/center Doug Legursky is back for the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team tries to compensate for the loss of starting center Maurkice Pouncey, who broke his ankle during their Week 2 preseason game against the Green Bay Packers last week, as per ESPN.

The 29-year-old former Marshall standout played the first five years of his NFL career with the Steelers from 2008 to 2012 and had started 17 games for the squad in the process. He was also part of Pittsburgh's Super Bowl XLIII champion team in 2009 and had started at center for the team during their Super Bowl XLV loss against the Packers.

Legursky had also played for the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and the San Diego Chargers in 2014 where he started at center in 13 games overall, 11 with the Bills. He is expected to perform as the backup for Cody Wallace, who now takes Pouncey's starting spot in the Steelers' offensive line.

Pouncey's injury required surgery to repair a broken fibula, which effectively ended the 26-year-old four-time Pro Bowler's season. The mishap drew a lot of flak to the NFL from football fans and analysts because it happened during a "meaningless" preseason game.

Legursky, an undrafted rookie in 2008 who initially played as a guard in the practice squad for Pittsburgh, had been a fan-favorite during his tenure with the Steelers. He gets to re-live the moment this upcoming season following his reunion with Pittsburgh fans and his former teammates.

PennLive noted that aside from Legursky, another reported option for the Steelers at center would be natural guard Chris Hubbard. Hubbard and Wallace had reportedly been alternating at center and guard during last week's practice sessions prior to Legursky's signing.

Undrafted rookie B.J. Finney will join the trio as the team's third or fourth-string center, which provides insurance for the Steelers' offensive line depth.

Pittsburgh's offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who formerly coached with the Tennessee Titans, was enthusiastic about Legursky's acquisition and had reportedly made a lot of plans to maximize his versatility as part of the Steelers' offensive unit.

To accommodate Legursky, backup wideout David Nelson, who suffered a left shoulder injury during practice, was placed on the injured reserve list, according to the league's official website.
