Fox News Anchor Criticized for Calling Robin Williams a 'Coward'

Robin Williams’ Tragic Death: Struggling with “Serious Money Troubles” Before Suicide?

Fox News Anchor Shepard Smith expressed his remorse for his insensitive remarks regarding Robin Williams' death on Tuesday after he used the word 'coward' to describe the actor a few hours after he was found dead.

The Fox News anchor made the comment on Monday evening while they were covering the famous actor's death, inciting outrage from Robin Williams' fans over social media.

"I have no way of knowing the depths of Mr. Williams' suffering but I never meant to suggest that he acted in any such manner," he explained, citing that the actor deserved better.

In a different tone from Monday night, a later statement from Smith described Williams as a 'one-of-a-kind American treasure' and the anchor declared his regret that his comments had been interpreted as criticism against the award-winning actor.

Smith was slammed by many fans on social media after saying that Williams was "such a coward" for deciding to end his life in spite of receiving so much joy from his children.

Meanwhile, 49-year-old actor Todd Bridges referred to Williams' suicide as 'a selfish act' on Twitter several hours after reports revealed his death.

He was also criticized for making such comments about the awful event.

Bridges then removed his posts and apologized for the insensitive comments he made attributing his remarks as a delayed reaction to the death of one of his own friends who had also killed himself a few months ago.

At 63-years-old, Robin Williams took his life in an apparent suicide after he hanged himself using a belt in his San Francisco Bay home. Medics also found superficial slashes on his wrists after he was found unconscious and not breathing by his personal assistant.

Investigations are still ongoing although police reports confirm cause of death is 'asphyxia due to hanging'.
