Smith, averaged  five points and four rebounds in nine games with the Heat in the summer league.

Heat assistant coach Dan Craig observed that Smith is very skilled in the low post and a very good passer, according to a Sun-Sentinel report.

Craig said that if Smith is in the high post, he does a good job passing to teammates who were cutting.

The assistant coach added that Smith is a veery good scorer around the basket and able to catch and finish well and moves his feet well.

The Heat had been interested in Smith throughout the offseason after seeing him in a pre-draft workout.

During summer league, Heat Vice President of Player Personnel Chet Kammerer said that Smith is an intriguing prospect who "got some talent" and "got great heands".

However, Kammerer said that Smith had to be really comitted to address his "major weight issues."

Furthermore, 23-year-old Smith said he had dropped 21 pounds in August, a commitment the Heat wanted him to make at the end of summer league.

According to Sports Illustrated, Smith's weight loss may have been the clincher that prompted the Heat to take another long look.

There were already 19 players slated for the Heat training camp that start Sept. 28, , with a limit of 20 players for NBA offseason rosters.

An ex-McDonald's All-American, Smith played only limited periods at both UCLA and Georgetown due to conditioning issues.

Smith is hopeful for a return and said that he's ready for whatever challenges and would love to lose  60 pounds just like ex-Heat Dexter Pittman.
