Israel Imposes Stringent Punishment On Palestinian Stone Throwers

Israel will inflict a minimum four-year imprisonment on Palestinian stone throwers and has granted Israeli police to use open-fire regulations.

The Israeli Security Cabinet of senior ministers has agreed on new temporary measures which include a minimum four-year jail term for adult stone or fire bomb throwers to clamp down on the increasing road-side attacks.

The Security Cabinet has voted unanimously to allow the use of sniper fire by police troops to fire on Palestinian and other stone-throwers not only in self-defense, but also at any time civilian lives are deemed to be at risk. The Security Cabinet has also approved a 4-year minimum sentence for stone throwing.

Apart from four-year imprisonment and open-fire regulations, the Cabinet also approved stringent punishment for teenagers including financial penalties for parents of youths under 14 years.

According to The Telegraph report, an Israeli man, Alexander Levlovich, 64, was killed last week in a car crash after his car was hit by a stone while he was driving in an East Jerusalem neighborhood.

Also, a 12-year-old Palestinian was injured on Wednesday due to stone pelting by Jewish teenagers. The same day, a fire bomb was flung on a Jewish house and set it alight - no casualties were reported.

Ruger rifles were used in the West Bank during the Second Intifada. They were prohibited for a few years after a number of Palestinian youths were killed by Ruger fire.

Attorney General Weinstein opposed the minimum sentences and suggested a temporary one-year order instead. However, the Security Cabinet voted to authorize the order for three years, as insisted on by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked.

Netanyahu has been pushing for the changes in regulations since a wave of stone pelting and firebomb attacks began in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

"We decided to change policy and wage war on stone throwers, bottle throwers, firecrackers shooters and those who disrupt the peace - quite simply a change," Netanyahu said Thursday, as cited by the Times of Israel.

RT reports, the new law enforcement has been criticized by Israeli political figures. "Netanyahu is apparently looking for a judicial license to kill and to murder," stated Aida Touma-Sliman, an Israeli MP for the Joint Arab List, accusing the ruling coalition of "people hunting."
