Video game publisher Activision is reviving the iconic Sierra Entertainment brand shut down six years ago as a result of a merger between parent company Vivendi and Activision.

Sierra will now be a subsidiary of Activision Publishing.  It will launch as an independent label that will focus on projects that are "edgy and graphically unique."

There will also be new IPs and contemporary re-imaginings of Sierra's classic games.

Sierra is best known as the developer and publisher of classic PC games such as King's Quest, Space Quest and Phantasmagoria that were influential in the history of the development of video games.

Other beloved Sierra franchises and titles include Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Leisure Suit Larry.

The all-new King's Quest will headline Sierra's roster of indie games in 2015 along with a new version of Geometry Wars to launch by the end of the year.

Developed by the Odd Gentlemen, the team that made The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, the new King's Quest adventure game is a "fully re-imagined" game that will come out in 2015.

The new Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions will now offer "full 3D action" contrary to its roots as a 2D twin-stick shooter which is both cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

Lucid Games, a developer founded by former employees from defunct Bizarre Creations who originally developed the series, is already creating new dimensions for the game.

Currently, there are no available screenshots from both games.

According to Bob Loya, Senior Director for External Development in Activision, Sierra wants to work with up and coming indie game developers who are passionate about working on Sierra IP projects.

The company is currently in talks with many indie developers and Sierra will announce these new indie games very soon.

Original Sierra founder Ken Williams said they are very proud of what they've created on Sierra Online and of what Sierra will become as an indie game specific brand.

Sierra Entertainment was founded in 1979 as On-Line Systems and was bought by Vivendi Games in 1998. The company has been owned by Activision Blizzard since 2008.
