Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Soars to Billboard's Top Spot, Thanks to Star-Lord's Cassette Tapes

Marvel Entertainment has certainly proved that "Guardians of the Galaxy" is not only having a spectacular time at the box office. The superhero blockbuster's soundtrack has also shot up straight to the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 chart's top spot.

Based on the figures released by Nielsen SoundScan, a whopping 109,000 copies had been sold for "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" in its second week.

The "Guardians" soundtrack raked in positive reviews from both fans and critics, particularly in the ways with which it was incorporated flawlessly into the film. These include the throwback tracks blasting out from Peter Quill's classic Walkman while battling evil intergalactic villains and protecting the galaxy.

"Awesome Mix Vol. 1" first entered the chart at No. 3 with 60,000 copies sold in the first week. Containing 12 tracks with a 70's retro vibe mix, the soundtrack went on to climb to the top stop, leaving behind the 51st installment of the "Now That's What I Call Music!" franchise.

Timeless tracks from The Jackson 5 ("I want You Back") and David Bowie ("Moonage Daydream") made the "Guardians" OST the second movie soundtrack to soar to No. 1 in the 2014 album chart.

The soundtrack for Disney's "Frozen" entered the Billboard Top 200 and stayed there for more than three months. It was also recognized as the only soundtrack that stayed at No. 1 for weeks since 1998 when the soundtrack for "Titanic" comfortably topped the others for 16 straight weeks.

"1000hp" by Godsmack entered the Billboard 200 chart this week at No.3 and has sold 58,000 copies. Spoon's "They Want My Soul" debuted the chart at No. 4 while the latest album from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, "Hypnotic Eye", bid the top spot goodbye this week and dropped to No. 6.

While a "Guardians" sequel is in the works, movie director James Gunn told Billboard that there will not be any special cassette-tape listening in the upcoming movies. "The sequel may not have the music playing in the same exact way as the first one", Gunn said.
