Car manufacturer Ford has announced that it is currently testing a fully autonomous car at Mcity. The company claims that it is the first car manufacturer to use Mcity's facility, a fake town built for the sole purpose of testing out self-driving cars.

Mcity, a nickname for University of Michigan's Mobility Transformation Center, is 32-care artificial city made for testing automated vehicles and other related technologies. The center opened its doors in July and it contains several two-lane, three-lane and four-lane roads. The fake city also has a complete set of traffic signs, traffic signals and intersections.

During its unveiling in July, University of Michigan Mobility Transformation Center director Peter Sweatman told MLive, "MTC is here to accelerate the deployment of connected and automated technologies for the benefit of society and economy. The voice of reason in this field, MTC says (automated vehicles) need to be tested, connected and valued - that's our mission."

According to Wired, Ford is planning to release its first autonomous car within the next five years. The company's ongoing tests at Mcity is part of its plan.

Ford is using Ford Fusion cars for its autonomous car research. The cars are equipped with cameras, LiDar, Radar and real-time 3D mapping technologies in order to navigate the world around them.

Various autonomous car-related tests have been made at Mcity but Ford is the first company to launch a full-scale test on the site. Mcity has various obstacles used to test autonomous cars. The complex also has various types of road that include concrete, fake brick, dirt and asphalt.
