Apple is rumored to be planning to introduce a thinner Macbook Air next year - in 13- and 15-inch models.

According to MacRumors, Taiwan's Economic Daily News was the first to report that the Cupertino-based company might introduce the revamped MacBook Air at the 2016 Worldwide Developers Conference.

If this is true, then it comes very timely. The MacBook Air hasn't received any major hardware updates since its release in 2008. Although the highly portable laptop is still regarded as having an amazing design, some changes would be welcomed by customers.

The upgraded MacBook Air is said to have a slimmer body, and will come in a 13-inch and 15-inch model. However, it is unclear if they'll be equipped with retina displays. An 11-inch model is also rumored, but its inclusion is still unclear as of now.

The new Macbook Air would come with fully redesigned internal components such as a new battery design, and a new cooling module. These changes have made it possible to make the device with a thinner body, which is said to be made of metal.

It is likely that 2016 MacBook Air models will feature a similar design with the 12-inch MacBook that Apple released earlier this year.

The new MacBook is 24% thinner than the current MacBook Air and is equipped with Intel chips that do not need fans, as well as a new keyboard design that allows for slimmer frames. It also weighs less at just two pounds.

Since the screen sizes are nearly the same for various Apple devices such as the 12-inch MacBook and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, some might think that the MacBook Air will be discontinued. The redesigned MacBook Air is expected to be welcomed by customers looking for entry-level MacBooks that are ultra-portable.

It wouldn't be long until 2016 is here. For shoppers, who seriously want a new MacBook Air, it isn't too long to wait.
