Ebola Outbreak: Liberian Quarantine Center Looted

Residents reportedly stole items including bloody sheets and mattresses while raiding a Liberian clinic that served as a quarantine center for Ebola patients.

In what was already a daunting task to contain the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, the incident has made matters worse. Liberian officials fear the virus could soon spread through West Point, which is the largest slum in Monrovia - the capital of Liberia.

Residents in West Point began looting the quarantine center late Saturday taking a number of items that contained blood, vomit, and other bodily fluids, which now poses a very high infection risk.

"All between the houses you could see people fleeing with items looted from the patients," according to a senior police official, adding that he now feared "the whole of West Point will be infected."

Ebola is not an airborne virus, but can easily be attained by coming in contact with the bodily fluids of the infected.

As if that wasn't bad enough, reports also show there was as many as 30 patients staying at the center and two-thirds of those patients fled during the raid.

You would think quarantining West Point, who has an estimate of 50,000 residents, should be a high priority. However no such measures have yet to be announced.

It's known that many West Point residents do not trust their government as conspiracy theories are going around claiming they plan to clear out the entire slum.

The Ebola outbreak has taken more than 1,100 lives in West Africa including over 400 in Liberia alone.

Other countries like Kenya have already taken measures that ban any visitors coming from certain West African countries, from being able to enter the country. The exceptions are any health officials or Kenya residents. Kenya also has suspended flights going out to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.
