Tesla will be recalling more than 7000 battery-operated Model S sedan out of the Chinese market, and more than 90,000 across the globe, because of reportedly faulty seat belts.

According to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the units affected were those manufactured from May 1, 2012 to November 12, 2015.

The cars issue is due to the improper connection of the front seat belts. The seat belts were allegedly not connected to the outboard lap pretensioners thus it may not provide total protection to passengers in case of a collision.

The discovery of the malfunctioning seat belt came after one Europe-based Tesla owner complained that the seat belt's bolt was nearing to loose in place when the driver turned to the passenger back seat to talk.

Tesla is asking all Model S Sedan owners to set an appointment or pay a visit to the service center for assessment. Nevertheless, they also asked car owners to self-assess their seat belts by pulling them firmly against a force of at least 80 pounds. They, however, further emphasized that their technician's expertise will not replace the need for assessment.

Repairing the defect comes at no additional cost. In an email sent out to owners, the company said that the recall is "a proactive and precautionary measure."

The company made clear that the recall is taken "without any inquiry of any kind from a regulatory authority" as this initiative was started by Diarmuid O'Connell, Tesla's vice president of business development, out of "an abundance of caution."

This is not the first time the company has asked for a voluntary recall of units. It can be remembered that almost 30,000 Model S sedans were also recalled because of charging glitches. General Motors also once pulled out millions of units worldwide following a flawed ignition switch that affects airbags.
