It is typical to get troubled, upset and even irritated when dealing with a crying newly born, especially when the baby wails all night long and won't quiet down.

The technique, referred as "The Hold" by Dr. Hamilton is comprised of only four very easy steps:

First, gently grab the baby and tuck the arms across its chest.

Next, secure the baby's arms after they're folded. With the same hand, support the baby's chin.

Then, using your dominant hand, slowly hold the baby's diaper area. Make use of the fleshy part of your hand to ensure that you are holding the baby securely.

And finally, position the baby at a 45-degree angle and gently rock him up and down. You may shake the baby's bottom as well.

It is important that the progression of the movement is steady and refrain from jerky motion. The angle is vital as it helps you retain control over the baby.

The babies immediately quiet down after Dr. Hamilton demonstrated the technique in the clip. However, if the baby does not calm down after doing The Hold, the pediatrician said to consider that the baby might be hungry or is sick.

Dr. Hamilton mentioned that The Hold is best only for babies 2 to 3 months old as after that they become too heavy for this approach.
